Cariboo Regional District –The Cariboo Regional District, along with special guests, will be celebrating the Grand Opening of the CRD Library (CRDL) – 100 Mile House Branch on Thursday, July 8, 2010. All south Cariboo residents are invited to bring the family to 449 South Birch Avenue in 100 Mile House for an exciting day of festivities in celebration of the grand opening of the library.
“As Cariboo Regional District Chair and a south Cariboo Director, I am extremely proud of the craftsmanship, dedication and pride that went into this project by Mierau and our entire south Cariboo sub-trades who brought this project to fruition” stated CRD Chair Al Richmond. “It is reassuring to know that not only did our new 100 Mile House Library get a spectacular, wood first, green home, but it also supported our local trades people in a tough economic climate.”
The festivities will begin with library tours starting at 10:00am by CRDL staff, which will highlight some key features of the new facility. At 11:00am there will be an official ribbon cutting with CRD Chair Al Richmond and Directors, Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod, Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett, and District of 100 Mile House Mayor Mitch Campsall and council. There will also be an official ceremony to dedicate the library as a legacy of the CRD’s the Forest Capital of Canada title for 2010 and 2011. From 11:30am to 2:00pm, the Friends of the Library Committee will be holding a BBQ by donation in the parking lot to raise funds to purchase some new furniture for the facility. There will be story reading and balloons for the children.
The new 100 Mile House library was built by Cariboo residents, for Cariboo residents. Bernard Perreten, who originally hailed from 100 Mile House, was the architect, while Mierau Contractors Limited from Abbottsford, BC was the general contractor. Throughout this project, Mierau utilized local sub-trades including Canada’s Log People, M.H. King Excavating, United Concrete, Carwen Custom Builders and Mainline Roofing - relationships they had established in 2002 when they built the South Cariboo Recreation Centre.
“This beautiful new library will not only enable the residents of 100 Mile House to have access to library facilities that meet their communities’ growing needs, but it is a fitting legacy project for the Forest Capital of Canada,” said Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops- Thompson- Cariboo.
“This has been a great project that will benefit the entire community for generations to come,” says Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett. “Not only have we obtained a beautiful new library, but we were also able to produce plenty of quality local job opportunities with its construction.”
“This project is another example of what can truly be accomplished when working in collaboration with your partners,” stated District of 100 Mile House Mayor Mitch Campsall. “I am confident that this library will be a great asset to all south Cariboo residents and will be a community pillar of learning, accessibility, and knowledge.”
The CRDL 100 Mile House Branch was built with financial contributions from the Canada-British Columbia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund. Details of the new 7,000 square foot log post and beam library include environmentally sustainable appliances and fixtures, such as high-efficiency boilers and radiant heat, dual flush toilets and waterless urinals, high efficiency lighting, and low-maintenance landscaping.
