Taiwan - Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo and seven other MPs from across Canada arrived in Taiwan last Saturday.
They met with Taiwan President Ma Ying-Jeou to discuss trade issues including the importation of Canadian beef to the East Asian country, as well as Taiwan’s decision to move forward on a regulatory framework for wood frame construction.
“President Ma warmly greeted our Canadian delegation at his office in Taipei,” said McLeod. “He was very generous with his time and we had an interesting and encouraging discussion with respect to the many common issues facing Taiwan and Canada.”
McLeod and the other MPs - Bob Dechert of Mississauga-Erindale, Lois Brown of Newmarket-Aurora, Terence Young of Oakville, Phil McColeman of Brant, Ron Cannan of Kelowna-Lake Country and Brad Trost of Saskatoon-Humboldt- also met with the Deputy Speaker and members of Taiwan’s legislature.
“It was invaluable to share ideas about important trade issues between Canada and Taiwan and common issues such as the global economic recession, H1N1 vaccinations and renewable energy technology,” said McLeod.
During their week-long stay, the MPs will also meet with Canada’s trade representative in Taiwan, Scott Fraser, and his staff to discuss immigration and visa issues facing Taiwanese-Canadians.
